Because it's Human Trafficking Awareness Day

Modern day slavery is the second-largest criminal enterprise on Earth, and unlike drugs or money, humans aren't a single-transaction item. It's pervasive, it's everywhere, it's oftentimes invisible. It's smuggled domestic workers who are entrapped by their employers and who have no recourse for assistance; it's the people who work on coffee farms that make your morning brew cheaper; it's the women who filled up the rooms in the 12 brothels within 5 miles of the White House I remember when I used to work in a nonprofit in D.C. It's also kids who run away from abuse at home only to get tricked by pimps and prostituted all over again on the streets -- a staggering number of them under the age of sixteen, and it's a system wholly unequipped with the tools, training, and resources to help. But all of that can be changed.

Be awesome. Be like [profile] ej_neko reminded me about this. Be proactive, and if you want more information, follow the links to Not For Sale, Polaris Project, HumanTrafficking.org, or the State Department's Office To Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons.

I don't know if you're interested but Channel 4 news did a fantastic in-depth report on human trafficking on Mexico's northern border. (Thanks to you, I now realise because it was Human Trafficking Awareness Day) It was shocking, but it's good to see the story get some mainstream media attention.
