This will not come as a surprise to anybody who knows me at all, but I am very much an East Coast girl, so recent Family Upheavals that have forced my hand and credit card toward West Coast destinations have been somewhat unsettling, to say the least. Still, I spent the first two weeks of January divvying my time between the Bay area and LA and it's been real.

Art installation in front of the LACMA. Yes, I know I should know what it's called. But it's contemporary art and my interest in it was situational and associated with trying to calibrate my white balance. Still, interesting! There were like three separate low-budget photo shoots going on there as I was taking this photo. I mean low-budget as in they had like an assistant, some desperate-looking models, and less impressive camera than me.

The Getty from the gardens. The Getty being the best part of LA and one of the best, most compelling reasons to revisit it aside from [personal profile] leupagus being there and being a parking ninja.

[personal profile] leupagus and I also agreed this would be a tres excellente place to discover a body for a museum murder mystery! We had Sherlock on the brain.

From the Getty's roof garden, an exquisite work of unparalleled what the actual fuckery. Note the phallus that is seemingly screwed (ha ha ha) into the body. There's also a great shot of this where [personal profile] leupagus is giving us -- and penis ecstasy on horseback guy -- a thumbs up.

Roadside somewhere amid the winding snake of U.S. 1 in Big Sur. I'm pretty sure as I was trying not to skid off of a cliff face while adjusting the shutter speed to take this shot, [personal profile] leupagus was taking a car nap like the champion, classy lady she is.

Also taken roadside, closer to LA than San Francisco.

A hilariously cliche roadside diner with an awesome collection of kids' cars in nowheresville, aka, Bakersfield. Sort of. Or anyway the outskirts of it. On the second day of driving, unrelatedly, there was a brief, terrible phase somewhere in the middle where we passed into Monterey, and were so loopy from the road and caffeine deprived we were driving around an upscale shopping center with me pressed up against the car window screaming, "WHERE IS THE STARBUCKS? WHY HAS THE GREEN MERMAID FORSAKEN US?"

For the foot fetishists. A shot of the dried lake bed at El Mirage. Kind of a gorgeously bleak, amazingly unique place. Also, great for inventive bike riding and destroying your tires and/or your transmission trying to break land speed records in a commercially available vehicle.

The lake bed at El Mirage. Otherworldly. Those skid marks? [personal profile] leupagus.

O.O WOW, that picture of the coastline is super amazing! I'm glad you didn't kill yourself getting it.

Huh. Those soils must be younger than fossil bearing strata. I'm used to seeing the edges of the clay sections curl up, rather than only being somewhat raised. All the thumbs up 'Gus! That is totally the only appropriate place to be leaving tire rubber.

Beautiful pictures! I especially like the one of the installation lamps; it's making me think of Inception set designs *___*

(I am, however, entirely too amused- and slightly alarmed- but the happy-penis-man-on-horseback. Wtf?)

Love that photo of the light filtering down through the trees.

My sympathies are with you and your abrupt relocation from the East Coast. I was forced to leave it for the midwest for grad school and I'm still haveing terrible withdrawal pangs lo these three years later. Every time I go back home to visit the tri-state I'm terrified that I'll have lost my ability to be sarcastic... or to look aloof and unapproachable while riding public transportation. (Also, we do have some Starbucks in the Midwest, but there are no Dunkin Donuts here. WHAT IS THAT??!!)
